Keep Digging
While heading into one of the buildings on campus yesterday, I overheard a poor fellow saying to one of the girls next to him:
Poor Fellow: No, what I meant was that I don’t see you as the dancing type.
Irate Female: So you don’t think that I can dance?
Poor Fellow: Well, no, I think you can, just that I didn’t think you would be that good at it, hence why you’re only doing a few lessons.
Irate Female: So you don’t think I should even go because I’m going to be so bad at it?!
I wasn’t privy to the rest of the conversation, as our paths only crossed for a few seconds. This brief snippet did lead me to start reflecting on how terrible some males are at recognising that they have dug a rather large proverbial hole, and that it is really about time they put down the shovel and stopped.
I’m not sure whether it stems from a fundamental desire to be right, or if we just unwittingly say something that can be interpreted incorrectly. But the number of times I’ve been in a situation like the one above boggles the mind. And like most males with mouths that speak without consulting the brain first, I have learnt that as soon as a situation similar to the one arises it is best just to lay down arms.
‘Put the shovel down. Would you like a bigger one?’ as an onlooker would be itching to say. The best thing is to stop whatever it was you were saying and just move on. Apologise for saying something that could be mis-interpreted, and change the subject entirely. Otherwise things just go from bad to worse. Trust me.

So, true Will. Wise words. You know you’re right, that you’re completely innocent and honest in at all, but sometimes you’ve just got to shut-up and keep quiet, let it all wash over, and don’t ever attempt to return to it (well I haven’t yet, and am not game to try).
