The English

So, now I’m in England! I’ve been staying in Windsor, where the little pointer on the map should be. It’s near to Windsor Castle, apparently one of the Queen’s favourite places to stay. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to choose which castle one wanted to stay in? We did a tour of London on a double-decker bus, they love them over here. They seem to be the workhorse of the public transport system. We’ve also done a cruise down the Thames. It looks even more disgusting than the Yarra River in Melbourne. We’ve also been on the London Eye, which is basically just a giant, overly-secure ferris wheel. In the process I discovered one of the great things about England, queueing. We had to queue in order to queue for the London Eye. Genius! These Brits know how to queue, and to make efficient queues. I knew we kept them around for some reason!

Another fantastic thing is the Changing of the Guard. We saw the official one at Buckingham Palace, and another one at Windsor Castle. It is an amazing show of the dogged determination of the English to stand by pompous tradition, even if it makes them look like fools. Great to watch though. Not only did we get to see loads of soldiers in fluffy hats, but the marching band played ‘Beat It’ by Michael Jackson. Possibly one of the funniest things I’ve seen/heard yet is the band managing to keep a straight face while playing it…Classic.

You should do the tour through Windsor castle. Actually there are several different tours IIRC, but the one you want is the one where the fires were - that building, can’t remember what it was called. Friggin’ stupidly amazing, well, if you get impressed by shiny stuff and art that is. The entrance foyer thing has floor to ceiling (… _high_ celing …) shiny guard weapons like swords and sheilds. Very impressive.

Also, if you are looking for good reasonably priced food and coffee, Pret A Manger is your friend.

    Have fun!

As for the Thames… yeah, thank go something is dirtier than the yarra, makes it ok for us to bathe and clean our clothes in there!
By any chance did you happen to run in with the manchester united football team official support group headed by vinnie jones. ( i know manchester is way north, not daft) Could have made them very proud with a brilliant rendition of Morning Train!

I love those buses. And English phone boxes. Man, when I saw the Changing of the Guard all we got was swing (very good swing mind you) but no MJ. Ripped off!

They clearly need to branch out some more - MJ - how tame.

  6. Will Says:
