I Don’t Get It!
Okay, I’ve seen a couple of things today that I just don’t get:
Fashion-Induced Foolishness:
Studying in the Law Library (or Legal Resources Centre for those who are slaves to ‘proper’ nomenclature) this evening I was lucky enough to see a couple of what I think are the silliest fashion articles this side of the visor (don’t get me started!)
- Extraneous Zippers on Jeans: A zipper for the fly I can understand, even a couple of zips so that one can remove the bottom half and magically turn them into shorts (cracker of an idea if you ask me!). But a zip that follows the seam up the side of the jeans, then proceeds across the bum of the jeans, and back down the other side. Why? Isn’t it uncomfortable? What functionality/usefulness does it add…? I just don’t get it!
- Stupid Scarves: A scarf is meant to keep one’s neck warm, and most scarves are wide and fuzzy and generally comfortable-looking. This I get, makes perfect sense to me. But why on [Insert Deity Name Here]’s green Earth would you wear a scarf that is longer than you are tall, and is about the width of your index finger? This thing looked more like a rope than a blimmin’ scarf, and how warm do you reckon a rope looks? And how much warmer would you feel with a rope wrapped around your neck? Takes me back to the old days when hanging was cool…ah, those were the days.
Unnecessary (I never could spell that word) Use of Manpower (I think):
While walking around the Carlton area this afternoon (on the way to and from exam number one, good times), I saw a peculiar thing. There were (council?) workers parked on the various grassed areas around uni - such as University Square, and Plaza Italia off Lygon street - with petrol powered compressors. They were jamming what looked like a large pogo stick into the ground, and pumping compressed air into the ground. I don’t get it! I know that grass does need aerating in order to help it maintain its growth etc., but I was under the impression that this was usually done in combination with de-thatching, by a tractor towing what looks like a giant rotating rake. If that’s the case, then what were these guys doing? Giving worms a run for their money? Trying to inflate land value? (Heh, I couldn’t resist!
)

I dont know if this had caught on in Melbourne yet (I hope not) but what about those big giant fluffy ugg boots with jeans - they are ment to be slippers to keep your feet warm at home…not to wear out in the streets, its just wrong people!!

Unfortunately, that’s always been in fashion in some parts of Melbourne.
The ‘nong, and Fountain Gate being fine examples.

For ex MLC gals uggies and jeans are high fashion….
www.mlc.vic.edu.au - for those who dont
And could someone explain the syntax from making a link…

Ok, macguyver, I’m not too sure whether that was deliberately written in obscure english… in fact I’m not even sure what the hell the last question is!
All I know is that ugg boots are fashionable when they should only be worn around the house, and that I’m being slowly asphyxiated by paint fumes in the engineering computer labs.

And could someone explain the syntax from (for) making a link…(where a single word appears in your post and you click on it to go to the site)
and for something actually funny go here –>

i for one think will’s pretty funny.

Heh, thanks for the backup hannah!
macguyver, have a look at any intro to html site for the syntax, but the general idea is like that of the rest of html:
-start a tag, with the command:<a
-the reference of the tag is the target site: href="http://www.willmidgley.com/"
-then we close the start tag: >
-type in the text you want the tag to apply to: click here
-then end the tag: </a>
so the final product looks like:
<a href="http://www.willmidgley.com/"> click here </a>
or click here

Even the wikipedia entry says out-of-the-house-ugg-booting is wrong…. !
“In Australia and New Zealand, this comfortable, warm footwear has been adopted by social groups such as bogans, westies, and bevans as acceptable in public. Most other Australians only wear ugg boots around the house, or at the most trips no further than the local corner shop.”
Check it out here …
*I love wikipedia (& am not procrastinating @ all)*

Gem, stop procrastinating! But I agree, Wikipedia is indeed the font of all knowledge.

Westies and Bevans.
Which sounds like
Wevies and Bestans if you swap the central letters around.
Which sounds like a cake mixture company.

what i don’t get is yesterday, i was in the big com lab in the LRC and there was this couple making out
June 8th, 2006 at 6:06 pm
Heh, blatant self-promotion, I like it!
June 8th, 2006 at 11:59 pm
If it was in the com lab in LRC it wasn’t annoying Michael then.
And say hello next time you pass Ronny. We’re the guys on the big tables near the main entry doing stuff with numbers. i.e. not essays.
