Ever Been to Aldi with Handbag-dogs?

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

So, I’ve moved house (see the post below titled Etc.) and now that production week is all over, I thought it was high time to start sorting my stuff out. After being woken up early this morning by an over-zealous, mobile-phone-trigger-happy friend, I decided that it was about time I did some shopping and tidying. Being near the centre of the city the closest supermarket is Aldi, a German (I’m sure I’m right this time) sensation that means low prices for brand-less products. Down I go to Aldi to see what there is to see…

Its amazing, they have their own branded products for everything, they stock a couple of brands like Milo and Herron Blue, but the rest are blatant rip-offs of traditional brands, ‘Dolomia’ pasta sauce, ‘Cucina Continental’ Pasta dishes… the list goes on. Another thing that Aussies seem to be a little slow on the uptake with is alcohol sales in supermarkets, but Aldi are there. With plentiful supplies of cheap beer and wine. They even had dishwashers and a two-camera security system on sale… go figure!

Okay, while writing that last paragraph something happened which will need a little explanation: As we know I don’t have the internet at home, so I’ve come to uni to do some assignments and post on my blog. Here I was, minding my own business in the Engineering Computer Labs when a couple of over-energetic engineering students (that’s right, it’s normal for us to be in at uni on a Saturday) burst in the door and started running around the computer lab. As soon as they burst in the door, out of nowhere comes a loud dog bark (it’s not generally the sort of thing one expects to hear in a computer lab) and a young woman’s handbag-dog jumps out from under the desk and starts yapping and barking and joining in the fun, chasing these two blokes around the lab.
I ask you this: Who the hell brings their dog to come and sit with them for four hours in a computer lab? Who would do that?

Surely this isn’t a thing that the average discerning dog owner does? One would presume that the possibility of the dog misbehaving would make even the thought of taking your dog with you to the computer labs unfathomable?

Well it’s been a (relatively) long while since I’ve posted here, I know you’re all shocked and mortified and all that. Now I know all three of you really want to know what the hell sort of excuses I have, so a couple of them follow:

  • I’ve recently moved, exciting huh! I’m no longer in trendy, groovy and upmarket South Yarra. I’m now in very-close-to-uni Carlton, I think we can see why I moved… (even though I’m at Uni, I’ve put the co-ordinates of my new flat into this post, have a look where it is on the map [the link on the right] ). That took an entire day of moving boxes, attempting to back trailers and generally losing stuff. I’m now using my Detour sign as a shelf for an intermediary measure until I can get to IKEA and see what this German(?) shopping sensation is all about…
  • For those of you who I’ve actually seen recently, you’ll know that I’m doing audio for a show at the moment called Working (Union House Theatre, season starts on the 12th of May, sorry thought I’d better have a plug for my own show) and it’s taken up a large amount of time. The good news is that I’m getting paid, so that makes it instantly ok.

Okay, so that’s about all I can think of right now, I’m sure there are more, but I’m lazy, so I’ll leave it there.

You may also have noticed google ads or banners or search things. The story behind them is that my blog was accepted into the Google Adsense programme, so advertisers can use my blog to advertise! Every time you click on one of these ads, or search in one of the google searchbars, it’s tantamount to a donation for web-hosting fees.

Okay, I think that’s all I really have to say at present, there will be a new-look blog out at some stage after I get some free time, and I learn PHP (can’t be that hard).

Permissions

Okay, nice to see some of you are using this blog (as lame as it is at the moment). Sorry about the moderation process, it was turned on by default, now I’ve just left it so that if you’re a new user, you have to be moderated on your first post, or something like that, I think.

I know not many people check this site, and that none of you would be checking it this late, but if you had, you would have noticed that the site was down for a while. “But Will, why on earth…” you are all saying… Well kids, let me tell you a story about permissions:

See I was trying to edit some of the page styles (what you see now is almost completely stock - see the footer) and to do that I had to make some of the files writeable. I thought that this meant they all had to be writeable by me and so started fiddling with what who was allowed to do, and where they were allowed to do it.

Sounds complicated enough, but then, just as I thought I had it sussed, I managed to lock myself out of my own files…skillful huh! So half an hour of hocus-pocus later I’ve managed to get it all back up and running, and with even less of an understanding about permissions than I had before, and no edited files…. hmph

Thank god, after almost an hour of dilly-dallying about with different plugins etc, I finally got the google maps plugin to work (see the bar to the right). So whenever I post somewhere new, it should show a nice red dot where I am, and you can click the indicator to be taken to the relevant post, cool huh! :-D
